Pairs Head Prowess

Well done to the two Cantabs women’s pairs who competed in Pairs Head on Saturday, braving wind and heavy rain to race over a 4.5km course from Chiswick to Harrods Wall. Both crews were competing in the W.IM2.2- category.

Eve Beere and Rachael Crockford set off at #464, and moved up on the Cardiff City crew in front of them. Unfortunately, the slower Cardiff pair failed to concede the stream to the Cantabs pair and the two boats became entangled, causing a significant delay, although thankfully no capsize. Eve and Rachel went on to finish in 17:10, 13th in their category.

Rebecca Pound & Eleanor Darlington started at #466, with the following Auriol Kensington crew starting aggressively close to them. Becca and Ellie were only too happy to push off their pursuers, and quickly left them behind. They finished an excellent row in 15:58, placing them second in their category, just 1.5 seconds behind the winners from Thames Rowing Club, and the fastest non-London women’s pair in the whole race. Whilst it was frustrating to lose by a small margin, and even more galling to realise that if they had entered as IM1 instead of IM2, they would have been comfortable winners, this was an excellent achievement for the pair.

Congratulations to all four rowers and to Tom Copeland who coached them!

Congratulations also to former-Cantabrigian John Hale, who raced in ELI.2x with a fellow Imperial sculler to finish second in both ELI.2x and overall.
