Cantabs Rower in Channel Challenge

Good luck to Dennis Roche, who will be taking on the challenge of rowing across the channel this autumn!  Dennis took to the water with Cantabs in the January 2012 Learn to Row course and rowed in the Hunter crew for bumps.  Dennis writes:

In the first weekend of October, myself and seven others, will be attempting to row across the English Channel in a Cornish Gig boat.  We have a 3-day window to make the crossing, depending on the weather and tidal conditions.

We are aiming to make the 22 mile crossing, from Dover to Calais, in under 6 hours. 22 miles may not sound far, however when you are rowing into a head wind over ocean waves through one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, then trust me it is far. The idea for the row itself was inspired by John Bishop’s Week of Hell challenge earlier this year, where on day 2 he rowed across the channel with a crew of four – a short video of his row, in relatively calm waters, is on YouTube. (http://youtu.be/l70y0GQRHwE?hd=1&t=43s).
We are doing for two reasons a) we are crazy and b) to raise £5000 for cancer support.

The crew is:

    • Andy Coles
    • Dennis Roche (Cantabs)
    • Jason Evans
    • Gary Antcliffe
    • Jonathan Gough
    • Alan Middlebrook
    • Steve Read
    • Richard Youell

We are raising funds for the Macmillan Cancer Support charity: http://www.justgiving.com/ckchannelcrew
