CRA Bumps 2015 – Day 2 – Cantabs Men stay on top

Cantabs Men successfully held onto Tuesday’s gains in the higher divisions, staying in front of Robs at Head of the River, but with rather more mixed results for the lower boats.

In Men’s Division Four, the Hunter crew (M14)  rowed over at the foot of the division, but on Thursday will have the prospect of chasing City 12, who have bumped down two places already.

Further up the division, the Men’s Juniors (M13) were chasing the HillBillies (M12). Whilst the Men’s Juniors are very new to sweep rowing, their years of experience in sculling boats stood them in good stead and they bumped the HillBillies in Plough Reach.

Motley Crew (M11) were hoping to row over at the head of Division 4 but got bumped by XPress 7 the end of Plough reach. They will chase the Cambridge Veterans on Thursday, in hope of their so-far-elusive first bump.

In Division Three, the InVeterEights again rowed over behind City 11, doubtless as part of a cunning plan to lull the younger city crew into a false sense of security! The Dads Army crew (M9) caught a crab near the A14 bridge, and sadly fell victim to the pursuing City 10 crew. Poachers (M8) rowed over in third place. Lucio Cicolecchia writes of the Aquaphobes’ evening:

After their disappointing row on Tuesday, which saw them bumped on the top of the Long Reach by St Neots 2, the Aquaphobes found themselves as sandwich boat on Wednesday. A solid effort in their first race at the top of Division Three meant that Champs couldn’t catch them over the entire course. The crew was then ready for a rematch against St Neots 2. This was a different race from the night before: the Aquaphobes put pressure on St Neots from the beginning, gaining steadily over the course and getting inside station, but at the top of the Long Reach – five strokes into their final push – they had to ease off as St Neots had caught Chesterton 2, who’d been battling valiantly up to that point. So two very good row-overs, but the Aquaphobes remain as sandwich boat and are looking forward to tonight.

In Division Two, the M2/Hills Rd 2 crew were bumped by City 8, the Masters crew (M5) rowed over after getting within a length of City 6 but without being able to finish the job, and the Hills Returners (M4) bumped Champs 2.

As the skies rapidly darkened at the end of an afternoon of mixed weather, the Men’s First Division set off a few minutes late. Hills Road (M3) held their ground at position 10 between XPress 1 and Chesterton 1 and M2 made some ground on City 1, but weren’t able to catch them. At the top of the division, Robs challenged hard to try to regain the headship, but Cantabs M1 showed their grit and determination, holding off every challenge to retain the top spot.
