CRA Bumps 2015 – Day 4 – Cantabs continue to shine

Cantabs continued to shine on the fourth and final day of CRA Bumps 2015!

After three days of racing in pleasant conditions, the weather took a turn for the worse on the Friday of bumps week. Light rain in mid-morning persisted and intensified through the afternoon and evening, slackening off briefly during the top divisions and then resuming into the early hours of Saturday. Special credit is due to bank parties, marshals and race organisers who stayed cheerful throughout a thoroughly wet experience and kept the races running smoothly.

Cantabs results are summarised below. The bumps charts illustrated can be seen in their interactive glory on the CRA website.

Cantabs M1 put in another confident row to retain the Headship that they had regained from Rob Roy on Tuesday. M2 were bumped by XPress 1, ending the week in 8th position. M3 (Hills Road) rowed over to finish 10th, up one place for the week, giving Cantabs three crews in the top ten.

In Division Two, both M4 (Hills Returners) and M5 (Masters) finished up two places from the four days of racing, with M4 bumping City 5 and M5 bumping City 6 before The Plough. Sadly Cantabs M6 (Hills Road 2) where caught by the blade-winning St Neot’s 2, meaning they finished down four places. Cantabs 7 (Aquaphobes) completed their 7th row-over of the week as the Division Two-Three Sandwich Boat!

In Division Three, Cantabs 8 (Poachers) were bumped a strong Isle of Ely boat, leaving them down one place overall. Cantabs 9 (Dad’s Army) rowed over to avoid spoons and Cantabs 10 (InVeterEight) got revenge on 99s 5 who had bumped them on Thursday. M11 (Motley) bumped XPress 7 to re-secure their place in Division Three, down two places overall.

In Division Four, the M13 Junior Men bumped the M12 HillBillies for the second time, after a mishap on Thursday, so M12 were down two and M13 were up to overall. Finally, M14 (Hunter) crew stayed ahead of City 12, to finish up one place overall.

W1 again rowed over behind City and ahead of 99, retaining their 2nd place overall. W2 were bumped by XPress, meaning they remained in 7th place overall. W3 continued their upwards charge, bumping 99-2 in First Post Reach to finish the week up five places and with blades to show for their efforts.

In the Division Two, W4 (G-Oar-geous) were bumped by Champs 4, despite having held them off on Thursday and finished the week down two places. W5 (Dev Squad) gradually ground down XPress 2, catching them just before Ditton to finish up a blade-winning 5 places.

W6 (Hills Girls) rounded off an action-packed week by bumping Champs 6, and finishing up five places overall, having over-bumped to be Sandwich Boat on Tuesday.

In Division Three, W7 (Racks Out) bumped Radegund 2, to finish up four places and securing blades. W8 (Women’s Juniors) bumped 99-7  to finish up three places. Cantabs 9 (F&J) secured their first bump, catching XPress 3 to end the week up one place. W10 (Hills Belles) rowed over for a third time ahead of City 10, also ending up one place overall.

Overall, Cantabs had a very strong week: retaining the Men’s Headship; the Women’s top crew comfortably holding onto second place; seven of the ten women’s crew going up, with four crews going up four or more places; only one crew getting spoons. Cantabs was the highest placed large club in the John Jenner Trophy for the club that on average gains the most overall places, coming third overall.

With such results to celebrate and the upper storey of the boathouse open for the first time, it is no wonder that spirits were high at the post-bumps party. Festivities continued through the early hours of Saturday morning until the barrels ran dry.

Well done to all the Cantabs rowers, coxes and coaches who took part, or subbed into preparatory outings. The club would like to say a big thank you to the CRA Bumps Committee for organising the whole event, and to everyone who helped make the bumps week a success, by bank partying, marshalling, preparing the boathouse, mending equipment, organising and coordinating, and cleaning up after the party.

Cantabs is very grateful to Downing and Jesus colleges who lent the boats needed to accommodate its biggest ever entry of women’s crews.
