Green Dragon Footbridge Closed & Navigation Restricted

The Green Dragon (aka Chesterton) Footbridge is closed for refurbishment for the next 10 weeks. The scaffolding will reduce the effective width of the channel, so traffic lights have been installed to limit the movements of boats to one direction at a time.

  • Cantabs crews should use extra caution when passing under the bridge and observe the traffic lights.
  • Coaches accompanying crews from CRA who wish to access the towpath down-stream from the ex-Penny Ferry/P&E will need to cross the river via the Riverside Bridge. If your crew/cox are inexperienced and will not be going downstream of the Reach, please consider whether a better alternative would be for you to stay on the Stourbridge Common side of the river (although this is currently very muddy downstream of the Railway Bridge.

More details from Bill Key (6th Jan):
“Scaffolding is in the process of being erected and will take about a week to complete. This will support an impervious enclosure whilst the paint containing lead and cadmium is being removed and then a protection whilst refurbishment is completed. After 5 weeks this construction will be moved to the other end of the bridge.

“The enclosure, which will extend across half of the river, will come down to within 1metre of the river surface on the closed side leaving a 10 metre channel open channel.

“Traffic signals will be erected on the river bank on the Stourbridge Common side upstream and downstream of the bridge. They will be cemented into the ground with additional protection to reduce the possibility of vandalism.

“The plan is to introduce the following sequence:
Upstream: Red for 2 minutes; Red for 1 minute; Green for 2 minutes
Downstream: Green for 2 minutes; Red for 1 minute; Red for 2 minutes.”

Stop/Go boards will be used instead of traffic lights at busy times e.g. on race days.
