Cantabs run four mens' Veteran squads and one womens, each boating crews (mostly eights and fours - who wants to be in a boat where you've got to do all the work yourself?) for most of the events on-Cam, plus others as and when time and enthusiasm permits. The ARA defines a veteran as anyone still competitively rowing who is aged over thirty, but in practical terms, most of our veterans can't even remember being thirty! They can't remember where they've put their spectacles either, or why they've come into this room, or ... where was I? Anyway, the Vet squads row all year round, with temporary breaks for seasonal activities, such as Christmas...or Summer...and, because veteran status is an absolute - you can win as many events as you like and your status won't change - many of those involved have been rowing together for several years. Or decades. That doesn't mean we don't welcome new recruits, cos we do. The on-water side of things is only one aspect of veteran rowing at Cantabs. Squad members are actively involved in other areas, such as training juniors, and are also represented on the main committee, where their prime function is to moan about how slow this year's first boat is and how, quite honestly, there's an awful lot to be said for wooden boats. If you'd like to renew your acquaintanceship with rowing, please get in touch with any of the squad leaders whose e-mail addresses are shown below. Although we cater for a wide range of fitness levels, availability etc., please note that the vet squads are not really the place to go if you've always fancied rowing but never got round to trying it. We cater more for those who either used to row competitively, but now fancy a slightly more relaxed way of keeping fit, or those who want to keep rowing into their dotage. If you are an 'adult beginner' then the club offers purpose-built instruction for you and you should contact either the Senior Mens or Ladies Captain (click on the "Squad Information" link on our home page) for further details Veteran Squads Contacts: Mike Walker |
