Cantabs wins Victor Ludorum at Peterborough

The club enjoyed success across both men’s and women’s events at the two day Peterborough Regatta on 13th and 14th August, winning the Victor Ludorum – the prize for the most successful club at the event.

On the Saturday, racing took place over the full 1k course, and saw wins from 5 crews. Two victories came from the Senior Women’s Squad, with Alex Courage and Harriet Cross dominating the W.IM3.2x event. Clear winners in their heat, they delivered again in the final to win by clear water. Ellie Darlington clipped a buoy and nearly capsized in the opening stages of the race, but went on to win over 10 seconds clear of the 2nd placed sculler.

The Intermediate Women’s Squad’s persistence entering W.NOV.8+ events throughout the regatta season finally paid off, with a win for Jessica Santos, Sally Hames, Emma Dalrymple, Alice Brownjohn, Debbie Morley, Rachel Bryant Davies, Kai Laing, Emma Siragher and cox Laura Brightman by 0.3 seconds over the 2nd placed crew. Mark Lawrence, Guy Fiddian, Charlie Cummins, James King and cox Steph Payne from the Senior Men’s Squad enjoyed a win in IM2.4+, with Sean Collins leading the field and winning the novice 1x event. Andrew Morley also broke novice status, winning MasB.NOV.1x after failing to qualify for the NOV.1x final.

There were also 2nd place finishes in NOV.8+, IM2.2-, IM3.4-, MasE.1x and 3rd place finishes in NOV.4+, W.IM2.2-, J13A.1x and J14A.1x.

Ellie continued her good form on the Sunday, where racing took place over 500m, again victorious in W.MasA.1x. The Senior Women’s Squad’s summer sculling also paid off for Georgie Plunkett, who was a convincing winner in W.NOV.1x. Also breaking novice status were Matt Crowe, Arthur Kuenzi, Leo Buizza, Moe Hadrawi and cox Beth Collett in NOV.4+. They then went on to team up with four rowers from Hills Road to win the NOV.8+ event. Having trained on the Tideway together for a couple of weeks whilst out of Cambridge, James King and Charlie Cummins avenged Finn Grimwood and James O’Dell’s loss to an Auriel Kensington crew in IM2.2- on the Saturday by beating them into 2nd on the Sunday.

There was also a 2nd place finish in Mx.IM2.2x and 3rd place finishes in Mx.IM2.8+, W.IM2.4+, W.IM2.2-, J14A.2x and 4th place finishes in W.IM3.2x and J14A.1x.
