7-May: Conditions on the Cam seem to be returning to normal and the boating restriction for Cantabs crews has now been lifted. As ever, crews should consider whether conditions are safe for their outing before boating. Crews that boat should exercise caution, allowing extra room when easying and spinning to avoid drifting into trouble.

-~-~-~-

5-6 May: Race outings may go ahead as marshals on the banks should mitigate risks to a large extent. Crews are encouraged not to boat for other outings over the weekend due to continued high water levels and fast stream.

-~-~-~-

4-May: Due to current river conditions, only first crews are permitted to boat. Any crew seeking an exception to this must obtain express permission from the Club Captain before their outing. Crews that are permitted to boat should, as ever, carefully assess conditions and decide if they are safe to go out.

Several (non-Cantabs) crews got into trouble at Baits Bite lock yesterday (3rd May) and the sluice gates have opened further since then, so the flow is likely to be even faster.

Any crew boating is cautioned to allow extra space above Baits Bite lock and must not spin downstream of the “spin here” signs. Please also allow extra space to avoid collisions with other river users, including moored boats. When visibility is limited, crews should display appropriate lights.

An update will be posted here and at https://www.facebook.com/CantabsRowing when these restrictions have been lifted.

Cantabs Men’s Squad kicked off the season by entering three boats into the Oxford City Bumps on the 21st April. The Oxford City Bumps take place over one day rather than four, is rowed in coxed IVs rather than VIIIs, follows “Torpids” rules*, has 13 crews er division and is a rather more relaxed affair than the Cambridge Town Bumps. Other than that, it is exactly the same!

The M1 crew started fifth so were up against the top crews from the first race. They had a slightly shaky start and didn’t manage to get the bump in the first race, but brought it back in for the rest of the races and went up 3 to finish 2nd overall.

M2 started at the top of the 2nd division, rowed over at head then proceeded to have an easy time of it, bumping up at every occasion to finish up 4 places and 8th in division 1, achieving blades.

M3 started just behind M2 at 4th in the second division, and bumped 4 times. Somehow, with all the the movements around them, they ended up 10th on the river (in the first division), but didn’t get blades!

So, overall a pretty good day’s racing, well done to all!

Full results are available at the City of Oxford RC website.

* If you bump you stop, if you get bumped you don’t. It makes races long for slow crews, but the fast crew still get a short bump! Ask Mike Hunter for an explanation.

Last weekend six Cantabs crews competed in the Radegund Mile Head race. 54 crews competed, from College and CRA clubs, with the 45 VIIIs heavily out-numbering the 9 IVs. A bracing headwind on the Reach meant that many crews were at least 30 seconds slower than their predicted times.

As is becoming a habit, two of the top three places were occupied by Cantabs, with the “Mega Shark” crew winning the IM2 category and overall event in 5:28 and “Giant Octupus” winning the IM3 category in 5:37, beaten by just one second by a City IM2 crew. The Aquaphobes were 4th in the Mens Novice VIII category, in 6:43, and the Poachers finshed in 6:56.

For the women, the W2 VIII (IM3) were pleased to finish in 6:53, placing them as 3rd fastest women’s crew, and W3 “Racks Out” (Novice) finished in 7:59. Both crews reported enjoyable races, feeling the benefits of training together in consistent crews.

Full results are available from the SRBC website.

Last weekend, John Hale took part in the final round of the national squad trials, hoping to be selected for the European Rowing Championships or the World University Rowing Championships later this year. His performance in the lightweight sculling time-trial put him 12th, just qualifying him for one of the A/B semifinals. Unfortunately (not helped by wind conditions), John came last in the semifinal, but his time was fast enough to take him into the B final, where he fought off a challenge from Rupert Price from CULRC to come 5th.

This result was enough to see John stay at Caversham for the remainder of the week for further selection testing, and he is currently in the running for a lightweight coxless four to compete at one of the aforementioned championships later in the season.

For more information, see the British Rowing website’s report on last weekend’s trials.
